C’était la première fois que je prenais l’avion pour aller immortaliser une star. Isabelle Huppert m’a reçu très gentiment dans la suite, de son hôtel à Lausanne. Un petit hôtel « vieillot » en face du lac. Elle tournait « Passion » de Jean Luc Godard dont elle admirait le talent : « Un acteur avance en état de cécité avec son metteur en scène… C’est le metteur en scène qui voit, et l’acteur qui avance sans voir, mais en croyant.” Ce jour-là, Isabelle se reposait et lisait un des livres que le réalisateur suisse lui avait confié, une biographie de la philosophe Simone Weil. J’ai pu la photographier simplement, sans ajouter de lumière. Elle me laissait faire. Nous avons déjeuné sur le joli balcon de sa chambre. Au menu, elle avait choisi pour moi, si je me souviens bien, des œufs de caille. Puis nous sommes sortis nous promener pour profiter des rayons de soleil de ce mois d’octobre déjà un peu froid.. En partant, Isabelle a croisé dans l’escalier, Michel Piccoli, qui tournait avec elle. Il ne l’a pas regardé. Comme si elle était transparente. Il devait être concentré lui aussi…

This was the first time I took a plane specially to photograph a celebrity. Isabelle Huppert very kindly received me in her hotel suite in Lausanne. A small, old-fashioned hotel looking out over the lake. She was filming “Passion” by Jean Luc Goddard, whom she really admired: “An actor moves blindly forward guided by their director… It’s the director who sees, and the actor moves forward without seeing, but by believing.” That day, Isabelle was resting and reading one of the books the Swiss director had given her, a biography of philosopher Simone Weil. I was able to photograph her very simply, without any added lighting. She just let me get on with it. We had lunch on her balcony. She’d ordered quails’ eggs for me, if I remember correctly. Then we went for a walk in the October sunshine, which was turning chilly. As I left, Isabelle passed Michel Piccoli on the stairs, who was filming with her. He didn’t even look at her, as though she were invisible. He must have been very focused, too…

В тот раз я впервые полетел на съемки звезды на самолете. Изабель Юппер очень радушно приняла меня в своем номере отеля в Лозанне. Милый старомодный отель у озера. Тогда она снималась в фильме «Страсть» Жан-Люка Годара, талантом которого так восхищалась: «Актер, работая с режиссером, как бы слеп… Режиссер – видит, а актер – прокладывает путь не видя, но – чувствуя». В этот день Изабель отдыхала и читала книгу, которую ей дал швейцарский режиссер, биографию философа Симоны Вейл. Я смог сделать простые фотографии, без постановочного света. Она предоставила мне полную свободу. Затем мы пообедали на ее балконе с прекрасным видом. Если я правильно помню, она выбрала для меня блюдо с перепелиными яйцами. Затем мы вышли на прогулку, погреться под уже холодными лучами октябрьского солнца. Возвращаясь обратно, Изабель столкнулась на лестнице с Мишелем Пикколи, – он снимался вместе с ней. Он на нее даже не посмотрел. Как если бы она была невидимой… Наверное, он тоже был очень сосредоточен…
