À l’époque, France soir tirait à plus d’un million d’exemplaires. Une aubaine pour moi qui avait seulement 25 ans. Je profitais de la notoriété du quotidien et de Robert Chazal, à cette époque, le spécialiste cinéma du journal. Gérard Depardieu vivait avec sa femme Elizabeth et leurs deux enfants, dans une maison un peu tarabiscotée de la banlieue parisienne. Les photos se sont imposées naturellement. Il y avait beaucoup de poésie dans l’air. Gérard et Elizabeth protégeaient leurs deux enfants et j’ai vite compris qu’il ne fallait pas leur demander qu’ils soient photographiés avec eux. Gérard a joué avec les petites marguerites de son jardin. On aurait dit qu’elles se livraient à une danse amoureuse animées par les deux grosses mains de l’acteur. J’ai beaucoup aimé ses premiers films et je partage la plupart de ses pensées sur la mort : « “Je n’ai pas pleuré à la mort de mon père, de ma mère, de Carmet, de Barbara et de Truffaut. Car, pour moi, tous ces gens que j’ai aimés ne sont pas morts. Ils sont là, sans arrêt, autour de moi, et nous nous parlons.”

At the time, France Soir had a print run of a million copies. It was a godsend for me, as I was only 25. I took full advantage of the newspaper’s renown and of Robert Chazal, who, at the time, was the paper’s film specialist. Gérard Depardieu was living with his wife Elizabeth and their two children in a rather over-elaborate house in the outskirts of Paris. The photos were very easy to take. There was a lot of poetry in the air. Gérard and Elizabeth protected their two children and I quickly understood that I shouldn’t ask for them to be in the pictures. Gérard was playing with the little daisies in his garden. It looked like they were performing a dance of love, moved by the actor’s huge hands. I really liked his first films and share a lot of his views on death: “I didn’t cry when my dad died, or my mum, or Carmet, or Barbara or Truffaut. Because, for me, these people I loved are not dead. They’re here, all the time, all around me, and we talk to each other.”

В те годы газета «France soir» выходила тиражом более миллиона экземпляров. Для меня, тогда – двадцатипятилетнего мальчишки, – это были просто золотые горы. Я, как мог, извлекал пользу и из славы издания, и из известности Робера Шазаля – редактора рубрики «Кино». Жерар Депардье с женой Элизабет и двумя детьми жил в парижском пригороде, в немного вычурном доме. Наша съемка проходила непринужденно. В воздухе была разлита поэзия. Жерар и Элизабет берегли детей от посторонних взглядов, я сразу понял, что не стоит их просить фотографироваться вместе с детьми. Жерар забавлялся с маргаритками из сада.  Они словно кружились во влюбленном танце в его огромных руках…. Мне очень нравились его первые фильмы, и я разделяю его мнение о смерти: «Я не плакал, когда умерли мои родители, Карме, Барбара, Трюффо… Для меня все эти люди, которых я любил – не умерли. Они здесь, все время здесь, вокруг меня, я говорю с ними…»
