Nicolas Moscara: Biography

If he had been born before the invention of photography and television, Nicolas Moscara would likely have followed in the footsteps of his ancestor Charles Pécrus, a friend of Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet’s teacher and a trailblazer for the impressionist movement.

Before studying art and photography at the Ecole des Gobelins, Nicolas started taking photos aged 15.

After getting his Baccalaureate certificate, he went to Cuba to join his uncle, a friend of Che, and came back with a series of black and white snaps inspired by Henri Cartier Bresson. Nicolas decided to become a photo journalist.

This was around the time of France Soir, a legendary period for the French press. In the 80s, everyone read “France Soir” and loved looking at the photos in this leading French daily. In 1981, a news magazine completely in pictures was created, France Soir Magazine, which gave young photographers a foot in the door.

Nicolas Moscara was one of these photographers. Aged 25, he was sent by his editor to photograph the biggest stars in showbiz: Serge Gainsbourg, Gérard Depardieu, Johnny Halliday, France Gall, Renaud, Catherine Deneuve, and many more.

In 1987, aged 30, it was time for a career change. He became a documentary filmmaker and covered the war in Lebanon, the bloody repression at Tiananmen Square, the events in Ouvéa, the first Gulf War and the liberation of Kuwait, Yugoslavia and the civil war in Algeria, Afghanistan, and Somalia. He followed the missions of the GIGN (France’s tactical police unit), the Marine commandoes, the Foreign Legion, the New York firefighters, the Parisian police force, and specialised in filming emergency helicopter rescues. He works for France’s main television channels and his documentaries are even shown abroad.

Today, Nicolas Moscara has invited us to admire the photos he took of celebrities 35 years ago. These photos have not been revealed before, because Nicolas Moscara had the supreme privilege of shooting the stars in their own homes, opening the previously inaccessible door to their secret garden.

Gobelins.
